Using Tree Rings to Understand Climate Variability and Drought Impacts

Forests in the western U.S. face climate change stresses, with drought being a key factor affecting tree growth and water use efficiency. My project examines how drought impacts aspen growth by analyzing tree cores from young aspens in an experimental garden. Tree rings reveal past climate conditions-thinner rings indicate drought, while wider rings suggest adequate rainfall. Understanding these patterns helps predict the future of aspen forests amid climate variability.
