Lactate Dehydrogenase Regulation by Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) catalyzes the reversible conversion of lactate to pyruvate with the concurrent reduction of NAD+ to NADH which is essential in metabolism. LDHA is highly expressed in the liver and LDHB is the predominant isoform in the heart. Knowing that ATP inhibits LDHA, not LDHB. This regulation reduces lactate production and increases glucose production via pyruvate-fueled gluconeogenesis, highlighting the liver's crucial role in glucose homeostasis.
