IceCube Upgrade Hole Ice Study

Presentation description

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located at the geographic South Pole, detects neutrinos by observing Cherenkov light emissions caused by relativistic charged particles from the interaction between neutrinos and Antarctic ice. Studying ice properties is necessary to reduce systematic uncertainties due to the properties of the medium for more accurate data analysis. IceCube upgrade, where seven new strings with advanced optical modules and calibration devices will be deployed inside the current array, will allow us to enhance our understanding of optical properties of the detector medium.|The goal of this project is to estimate the sensitivity of measuring hole ice properties, which is refrozen ice in the drill hole after the deployment of the IceCube Upgrade strings. A central bubble column is expected to form during the freeze process and this study determined the accuracy with which the position and size of this bubble column can be found using camera image simulations. Simulations assume the geometry of the IceCube Upgrade camera system, with a pointing downward camera and pointing upward LED.
