My research is centred around the production of C5 epimerase, an essential enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of heparin, which could allow easier derivation of heparin in comparison to traditional methods (through animals). Through sequencing of the gene, molecular cloning and transfection , I have been able to clone the gene and begin producing the enzyme. Next steps include testing the enzyme's activity through NMR and mass spectrometry.
