Determining Bacterial Community Compositions and Methane Flux of Red Butte Canyon Sediment Over Time

Semester: Fall 2022

Presentation description

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas which contributes heavily to global warming. One way scientists could help reduce methane in the air is through understanding how methane oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs) interact with methane producers (methanogens). The methane flux was collected from both water saturated soil and dry soil in Red Butte Canyon. The flux was related to microbial communities, collected from small soil samples at each site, after being sequenced using 16S rRNA sequencing.
