Before and After the Potter’s Wheel: A close look at lore surrounding ceramics’ most iconic tool

Semester: Fall 2024

Presentation description

This project challenges ideologies that use gender to valorize or denigrate ceramic tools and techniques. The research draws two centuries of interdisciplinary writing about ceramics, technology, and culture. The findings identify the ideology's source and find alternative narratives to understand ceramicists as a class and what motivates change in ceramic production. It also accounts for the persistence of ancient methods despite technological advancements.
