Climate Science & Carbon Mineralization Study

Faculty Mentor: Ashutosh Tiwari
Title: Professor
College: Engineering
School / Department: Engineering/ Materials Science & Engineering

Project description

We are undertaking an ambitious project to investigate the effect of expedited weathering conditions on the CO2 removal efficacy of naturally occurring calcium- and magnesium-based mineral oxides. Our goal is to enhance the rate of carbon mineralization using accelerated weathering conditions mimicking rapid temperature changes and intense ultraviolet radiation exposure.

Keyword: Greenhouse gas mitigation

Student Role:
  • Assist in assembling a customized system to create accelerated weathering conditions.
  • Prepare samples for carbonation, followed by phase and morphological characterization.
  • Perform carbonation experiments under expedited weathering conditions.
  • Determine carbon content, phase, and morphological changes in the reacted samples.
Project Duration: 10-15 hours per week
Opportunity Type: Research Internship
Opportunity Location Type: In Person
Is this a paid opportunity: Yes
Minimum Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Laboratory experience is an advantage.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
