Project description

The BASIC study is a multi-center endeavor investigating the effectiveness of infection mitigation strategies in preventing the transmission of common pathogens in the operating room.

Student Role: Students would assist with:
1. Screening/consenting patients in the Orthopaedic Spine and Joints clinic
2. Collecting bacterial swabs from the patient and operating room environment during the operation
3. Following the patient to and collecting swabs from the recovery room environment
4. Learning about and screening medical charts for post-operative infections
Student Benefits: Experience working with human patient populations, clinical exposure in the operating room and orthopaedic clinics
Project Duration: 5+ hours per week for 3+ months, with the potential to continue beyond one semester
