Gannet Hallar

Title: Professor
College: Mines & Earth Sciences
School / Department: Atmospheric Sciences
Mentoring Philosophy:

Dr. Hallar strives to create a positive environment for researchers within her group by encouraging team mentoring. HART (Hallar Aerosol Research Team) meets approximately weekly as a team and currently consists of associate scientists, graduate students, undergraduate students, along with Dr. Hallar. Additionally, Dr. Hallar has smaller group meetings (individually or for a specific project) approximately biweekly. Dr. Hallar encourages all members of the team to view themselves as intentional mentors, and to both teach and learn from the multiple perspectives within the group. Dr. Hallar works to create a mentoring network (community of mentors) for members of the team, finding both internal and external support for each team member. Dr. Hallar is constantly amazed by the talent within the group, and continuously learning from the team. This network also allows for a unique combination of ideas that often leads to faster or more create solutions.

Via participation in HART, members apply their research skills and education to societally-relevant problems. We strive to have all members of HART appreciate the beauty and wonder of science; develop sufficient knowledge of science to direct public discussions on societally-relevant issues; and develop the skills to enter or continue the careers of their choice. The interdisciplinary nature of aerosol research allows for students to tailor projects/project ideas to their specific interests and skills. Students with an interest in meteorology, computer science, atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics, modeling, field work and/or data analysis are welcome. Dr. Hallar also encourages all members of the research group to continue professional development, including on-campus activities, webinars from various professional organizations, and travel to conferences and workshops. Dr. Hallar strives to communicate clear expectations for both time commitments and performance evaluation for all members of the team. The expectation from team members is to properly represent the authorship of all work, treats all members of the team with respect and professionalism, and correctly use and document data/code so that all results can be validated. Finally, HART provides laboratory and field safety trainings for all members.
