I try to encourage the natural curiosity of my colleagues in the lab, giving trainees quite a bit of latitude with regard to what they want to study. The lab is a supportive and encouraging environment: All members of the lab take pride in being available to each other to teach and to listen and to collaborate. We expect to train rigorous and ethical scientists, with a fairly broad grasp of what are interesting questions in biology and medicine today. We encourage going to seminars, reading the primary literature, actively participating in civic events. We are welcoming of lab members from diverse backgrounds and we hope the lab environment encourages members to learn from each other's background.
