Understanding the Impacts of Creating and Maintaining Community for LGBTQ+ Youth Experiencing Homelessness

Semester: Summer 2024

Presentation description

Among LGBTQ+ youth, those who experience housing instability report significantly poorer mental health outcomes, and LGBTQ+ youth are represented at over twice the overall youth rate in reports of unstable housing. LGBTQ+ youth in general report higher rates of considering and attempting suicide compared to heterosexual and/or cisgender youth. Encouragingly, youth who report a higher sense of community are much less likely to consider and attempt suicide. With these relationships in mind, this research engages with insecurely housed LGBTQ+ youth to ask where and how they find community.
