Presentation description
Our project was a 2 (between-subjects: researcher selected music; self-selected music) x 3 (within-subjects: lyrical, non-lyrical, no music) mixed factorial design which tested the effects of 1) Music Familiarity and 2) Music Type on word recall as well as perceived task difficulty, enjoyability, and success. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups, (1) Researcher Selected Music or (2) Self-Selected Music. They were then tasked to study a word list for two minutes under one of three music type conditions (Lyrical, Non-Lyrical, No Music) followed by a one-minute delayed recall task during which participants were given 2 minutes to recall the word sets under the same type of music condition. Participants rated Researcher Selected Music as more enjoyable than Self-Selected Music when the music was non-lyrical, and recall was better for no music compared to lyrical music.
