Self-Interpretation of Symptoms in Pediatric Brain Tumor Patients: A Comparison Study of Symptoms with Other Cancer Types

Semester: Summer 2025

Presentation description

This thesis examines how children aged 6-12 with brain tumors experience and self-report symptoms compared to peers with leukemia, lymphoma, or other solid tumors. Using data from 95 patients who completed the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS 7-12), the study analyzed eight common symptoms by diagnosis and time since diagnosis. While brain tumor patients reported fewer symptoms overall, early post-diagnosis patients experienced more symptoms. Fatigue and pain were most common, and symptom distress remained clinically relevant across all groups. Findings underscore the importance of child-centered symptom assessment and the nurse's role in early, individualized care.
