Representing Abandoned Spaces: Juan Rulfo’s Text and Image

Semester: Spring 2026

Presentation description

In his novel Pedro Páramo (1954) and throughout his photography, Juan Rulfo tells the stories of the rural spaces left behind in the wake of Mexican urbanization. The spaces at the center of Rulfo's work appear to be empty, but on the contrary—memories and echoes of the people who once filled them with life still ring throughout. This thesis compares methods of representation in two distinct media—text and image—and ask how an artist might go about representing an abandoned space that is haunted by the past.
