Reductive Debromination of Aryl Bromides by Mediated Oxalate Oxidation

Presentation description

Here, we report a new electrochemical method that enables reductive dehalogenation to be carried out at a carbon electrode using a mild oxidizing potential. Reductive dehalogenation processes are a commonly carried out chemical synthesis, typically for the remediation of pollutants, which traditionally require toxic chemical reductants, precious metal catalysts, or large negative electrode potentials. Alternatively, oxalate oxidation produces a strong reducing agent, CO2 radical anion, which is capable of reducing substrates whose standard potentials are less negative than that of CO2-/CO2. Using this method, we successfully carry out the debromination of various aryl bromides at a low electrode potential.
