Plants & Pastoralists: A Livelihood Story

Semester: Spring 2026

Presentation description

Traditional ranchers rely on local ecology to sustain themselves. However, drought compromises this reliance. We analyze the plants that are used by ranching populations in rural Baja California Sur. We perform a freelist analysis on the plants useful to ranchers and their livestock, focusing on geographic region and herd composition. We examine how extreme drought events impacted the plants ranchers rely on and discuss how policy should involve both cultural and environmental sustainability.
