Pathologic history of an exceptionally preserved specimen of the carnivorous dinosaur Allosaurus from the Jurassic of North America

Semester: Spring 2025

Presentation description

An exceptionally preserved specimen of Allosaurus with skin exhibits multiple bone injuries. The lower right leg, ankle, and foot are rehealed. Serious pathologies in the skull indicate massive infections in the tooth sockets. Overall, we describe all cranial and skeletal pathologies and classify them with their likely cause. The limb infections likely slowed the animal down, but the facial infections that spread into the pneumatic spaces within the skull were likely the final cause of death.
