Microbial Defense Against Environmental Stressors in Brine Shrimp

Semester: Spring 2025

Presentation description

The Great Salt Lake (GSL) is a stressful environment for living organisms due to incredibly high levels of salinity that vary around the lake. One of the few animals that thrives here is the brine shrimp (Artemia) which has evolved to tolerate high levels of salinity through the upregulation of sodium pumps. It is also hypothesized that the microbes closely associated with brine shrimp assist in their survival in thalassohaline brines.
