Measuring the Bond Dissociation Energies of Transition Metal Cyanides/Isocyanides

Semester: Summer 2025

Presentation description

Transition metal cyanides/isocyanides (MCN/MNC) offer insight into metal-ligand bonding but remain unexplored in terms of precise and accurate experimental bond dissociation energies (BDEs). This study measures precise and accurate BDEs of MCN/NC species utilizing resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) spectroscopy by detecting a predissociation threshold. These BDEs serve as stringent benchmarks for computational chemists offering new data for comparison with high-level theoretical methods. It is computationally difficult to obtain precise and accurate BDEs for molecules containing d-block elements. Future results will reveal periodic trends, contributing to a deeper understanding of bonding in transition metal complexes.
