Presentation description
The golden age of antibiotics ended 30 years ago, with few discoveries since. As antimicrobial resistance rises, finding new antibiotics is critical. Our lab studies Methylocystis species strain SC2 (SC2), which may produce a rare lanthipeptide. Lanthipeptides are known for antifungal and antibacterial properties but are uncommon in methanotrophs. SC2's lanthipeptide gene cluster is silent, so we aim to activate it. Knowing its sequence helps us identify its masses using Mass Spectrometry.
