Background:
Utah has one of the lowest HPV vaccination rates in the United States with a 50% coverage estimate (Vaccination Coverage Among Adolescents (13 - 17 Years), 2024). HPV prevention is a public health priority, especially in regions where cultural values may impact vaccine uptake. Being able to understand the communities' specific challenges is critical in improving vaccination rates.

Objective:
This project aimed to examine the perspectives of healthcare providers on HPV vaccine promotion in Utah and explore ideas on how to increase vaccination rates statewide. The goal is to find ways to increase the number of patients willing to get the HPV vaccination.

Methods:
Qualitative data were analyzed from focus group interviews with healthcare providers across multiple counties in Utah. A total of 25 participants took part in three separate focus group sessions, including 4 men and 21 women. Five participants identified as Hispanic or of Spanish origin. Of the 25 participants, 11 were licensed providers, and 13 were healthcare team members. Demographic data were visualized using R and Excel, including a table and a map highlighting provider counties by RUCC (Rural-Urban Continuum Code) scores.

Results:
Providers reported that referring to the HPV vaccine as a "cancer prevention shot" was more effective than framing it as protection against a sexually transmitted infection due to cultural discomfort surrounding sexuality and the value placed on sexual purity. Patients' health decisions were often influenced by social media, word of mouth, family counseling, and discussions with their primary care providers. Hispanic and former refugee patients were more likely to trust their provider's advice above other sources.

Conclusion:
The providers' perspectives offer valuable insight on how to relay public health information for the state of Utah. By Aligning HPV vaccine promotion with community values and culturally sensitive language this may help reduce resistance and improve vaccination rates across Utah.
