Presentation description
Filler words are often characterized for their role in language processing but are also a common phenomenon in memory contexts. This research leveraged a large open dataset of intracranial neural recordings taken during a verbal memory task to characterize the role of filler words in memory processes from both behavioral and neurophysiological perspectives. Findings support a link between filler words and so-called "retrieval mode" processing, a state characterized by effortful memory retrieval.
