Farcical Feminists: Unreasonable Reason in Nineteenth-Century Literature

Semester: Fall 2025

Presentation description

Abstract: Through a feminist lens, Miss Havisham's and Mrs. Bennet's "unreason" might be re-interpreted as "reason" which manifests itself in opposition to patriarchy. In addition, humor (in the form of satire) allows their proto-feminist ideas to be dismissed, de-weaponized, or villainized so as not to be perceived as a threat to patriarchal norms. Using secondary sources and the frameworks of bi-sociation and farce, I explore this argument. Presentation slides
