Exploring Linkages Between Recent Historical Wildfires and Sediment Composition in Utah Lake via Sedimentary Records and Wildfire Records

Semester: Summer 2025

Presentation description

The aim of this research project was to investigate the potential linkages between recent historical wildfires throughout Utah to sediment composition in Utah Lake by analyzing sediment core samples that we collected at Provo Bay and Gosher Bay on Utah Lake. We focused on charcoal counts as indicators of wildfires, water pore volume to assess sediment permeability, and dry sediment levels to evaluate both charcoal levels and sediment nutrient levels in Utah Lake, thereby enhancing understanding of fire-related impacts on lake sedimentation and lake charcoal levels at Utah Lake.
