Cambio con Sabor: The Effects of Culturally Responsive Diabetes Prevention Program Adaptation on Hispanic Populations

Semester: Summer 2024

Presentation description

The CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) is a year-long lifestyle intervention targeted for weight loss of 5-7%, increased physical activity, and diet change (CDC, 2024). This curriculum has been delivered in English and Spanish to target Hispanic communities with higher type 2 diabetes prevalence rates. Unfortunately, the CDC curriculum is less effective for the Hispanic population partly due to low retention and fewer Hispanic community members enrolling in the program (Ely et al, 2017). Thus, the current National DPP curriculum does not meet the needs of Hispanic communities. Familism is very prevalent in the Hispanic community. Familism also has seen a positive correlation with physical health (Corona, 2019). Due to this, implementing an adapted family-based lifestyle intervention curriculum designed to engage the Hispanic community effectively is extremely valuable.

Through the HEART lab and a local community organization, the ADIOS T2D project was broken into two aims to understand National DPP adaption, targeted to the Hispanic community through family-based intervention. Due to the lack of a culturally adaptative curriculum, the HEART lab created two AIMS to adapt the curriculum to be more culturally relevant to the Hispanic/Latinx community. Aim 1 was previously implemented to inform the creation of an adaptation of the program that would best meet the needs of the Hispanic community with community partner feedback. This aim included the delivery of the National DPP curriculum in Spanish (PrevengaT2) by Community Health Workers (CHWs). Participants were Hispanic individuals at high risk for type 2 diabetes, along with an adult family member. Participant feedback was collected through weekly focus group meetings and questionnaires before and after the program. CHWs also gave feedback to the team. Based on this feedback, PrevenganT2 was created to better meet the needs of Hispanic communities in Utah. This poster analyzes the effects of the community from having a culturally responsive adaptation.
