Axon Geometry Impacts Activation Threshold: Implications for Deep Brain Stimulation

Semester: Spring 2025

Presentation description

This research examines how axon curvature affects neuronal activation thresholds in deep brain stimulation (DBS). Using MATLAB simulations of Hodgkin-Huxley axons with straight, circular, and parabolic geometries, the research found that axons curving away from electrodes required less current to activate, while those curving toward required more. These findings suggest incorporating axon geometry into DBS models to improve electrode placement and therapeutic outcomes.
