Could students benefit from a tool that can flag novice code structure and provide hints or suggestions on how to improve the code structure at compile time while they program? Can the same tool help instructors quickly get a clear picture of students’ gaps in understanding? I investigated these hypotheses by conducting think-alouds with 10 students as they used the tool and by conducting interviews with 4 CS professors. Results suggest that students and instructors could benefit from the tool.
