Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care and are prescribed painkillers. Additional research on potential risk factors is needed that explains why some patients can take opioids as prescribed, whereas others will misuse them. This study evaluates emotional distress, such as PTSD, as a potential risk factor for opioid craving. PTSD may predict heightened cue-elicited craving.
