An Honors Thesis focused on references to “One Thousand and One Nights” in two pieces of Viennese Modernist literature: “Das Märchen der 672. Nacht” by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and “Traumnovelle”, by Arthur Schnitzler. The piece takes Freud’s “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” and Bataille’s “Erotism” as its critical frameworks and examines how the intertwining of the death and life drives, represented by Scheherazade, play a role in modernist art.
