Sudden death due to severe nocturnal hypoglycemia occurs in 6% of individuals with insulin-treated diabetes who experience hypoglycemia. Sudden death is tied to severe cardiac arrhythmia induced by severe hypoglycemia. Preventing cardiac arrhythmias by stabilizing a calcium channel in the heart reduces arrhythmia and mortality during hypoglycemia.
