Virtual Presentation Guidelines

All presentations should be aimed at a general audience. The Summer Symposium is an opportunity for students to communicate their research to an audience from a broad range of backgrounds.

The Summer Symposium is scheduled 9:00AM-12:00PM. Presenters will be randomly assigned a presentation time, either 9-10:30AM or 10:30AM-12:00PM. They will receive notification of their assigned presentation time before the event. Presenters must be at their poster and available to discuss it for the entire assigned time within the online platform Gather.Town.

The Summer Symposium is a POSTER ONLY event. In order for us to upload and embed your poster to Gather.Town, the image must be:

  • in .png,  .jpg, .webp format
  • at least 1000px for the width (10.5 inches)
  • at least 600px for the height (6.25 inches)
    • If using PowerPoint to design poster, select the Design tab, then select the Slide Size icon and choose Custom Slide Size. Change width to 10.5in and height to 6.25in. Choose Ensure Fit.
  • max 3MB in size

Gather recommends a minimum DPI of 72, but this is not a requirement. All images will be enlarged to fill inside of the iframe, so exact dimensions and proportions are not required. Transparent backgrounds will be filled with a black background.

Some students have reported issues with saving their PowerPoint file as an image. If this makes your image blurry, follow these steps from your PowerPoint file:

  • Go to File > Save As. Select PDF for the file type.
  • Open the PDF in Adobe Photoshop. Verify that the width and height are correct and click OK.
  • Check for errors and check the image quality (zoom with View > Zoom In).
  • Go to File > Save As. Select JPEG for the file type. Click Save and OK.
