Project Background
Discrimination-related stress is a serious health risk for marginalized individuals, linking to anxiety, cancer, cardiovascular reactivity, depression, heart disease, hypertension, and obesity (Garfin et al., 2018; Carter et al., 2017; Pascoe & Richman, 2009; Smith et al., 2020; Williams & Mohammed, 2009; Williams et al., 2019). However, what if we haven't fully understood its true extent and human cost?
Existing research treats discrimination-related stress as a one-dimensional experience, overlooking its complexity and multifaceted nature. This study aims to address this gap by introducing the concept of Discrimination Appraisal (DA), Discrimination Validation Stress (DVS), and Discrimination Management Stress (DMS) to develop a more comprehensive theoretical model that captures the full scope of discrimination-related stress. DA refers to individuals' subjective evaluation of whether the incidents they encountered were acts of discrimination. DVS arises as people engage in DA. DMS refers to the stress from seeking resources and employing strategies to cope with the emotional and physical harms caused by discrimination (e.g., Jacob et al., 2022).
Student Role
The Undergraduate Research Assistant will play a key role in supporting the research project investigating the multidimensional nature of discrimination-related stress. This project introduces new concepts, including Discrimination Appraisal (DA), Discrimination Validation Stress (DVS), and Discrimination Management Stress (DMS), to create a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of discrimination on human health. The assistant will work under the supervision of project leads and senior researchers, gaining hands-on experience in data collection, literature review, and theoretical development.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Literature Review and Analysis:
2. Data Collection:
3. Data Management and Preliminary Analysis:
4. Conceptual Development Support:
5. Academic Writing and Presentation Support:
6. Engagement in Research Ethics:
Student Learning Outcomes and Benefits

As a mentor, I will offer a supportive, growth-oriented environment that fosters both academic and personal development. You can expect regular one-on-one meetings to discuss your progress, challenges, and goals, where I will provide feedback on your research contributions, guide your understanding of complex concepts, and help you develop critical thinking skills. I will emphasize the importance of inquiry and encourage you to actively engage with the research process by asking questions and sharing your insights.
You will receive guidance in navigating academic literature, conducting rigorous research, and developing skills in data analysis and academic writing. I will also support you in understanding the broader implications of our research, particularly how it contributes to addressing racial and health disparities. This experience is designed to prepare you for future academic or professional pursuits by building your confidence and competence in research.
Moreover, you can expect a collaborative and inclusive environment, where your perspectives are valued, and you are encouraged to take initiative. I will offer networking opportunities, connecting you with other scholars and professionals in the fields of psychology, public health, and social justice. Lastly, I will provide personalized mentorship, helping you navigate the unique challenges you may face as an emerging scholar, ensuring you leave the program with both practical skills and a deeper understanding of discrimination-related stress and its human cost.
