Project Description:
I am happy to mentor students interested in learning about research in stellar spectra, spectroscopy, planetary, stellar, and Galactic science, as well as data science and analytics.
Opportunity Type:
Volunteer; This is a work-study research position; Prepare a UROP proposal; Write an Honors Thesis; Earn independent study credit
Student Role:
Making spectroscopic measurements; coding/programming existing legacy code and/or developing new code to derive chemical compositions, stellar parameters, & plotting results
Student Benefits:
Most students working with me have learned coding and programming skills, as well as the science of the spectroscopic or data analyses that they are involved in.
Project Duration:
Can be as short as a semester or evolve into multi-year projects ~10 hours/week when school in session
Minimum Requirements:
o Interest in astronomy research
o willingness to learn Unix/Linux, python or other language
o PHYS/ASTR 2500 useful but not req'd
o other ASTR/PHYS courses also useful
