The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Utah offers a research experience program in physics and astronomy that allows undergraduate students to work closely with a faculty mentor and their research group on an individual project. All interested students are invited to apply for this 10-week summer program.
Program participants gain direct experience by working in ongoing experimental or theoretical research programs in the following fields:
- Astronomy and Astrophysics
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Cosmic Rays
- Particle Physics
- Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
- Physics Education Research
All students attend weekly seminars on current research in physics in addition to machine shop training and Physics GRE workshops. The experience culminates with the writing of a report and presentation of findings at a closing symposium.
The summer months in Salt Lake City offer outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation and other activities associated with the University. Surrounded by spectacular mountains, Salt Lake City is within easy driving distances to Great Salt Lake and nine national parks, including Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Grand Teton, and Arches National Park.
Participants will receive a $6,000 stipend and University housing is provided. Travel costs to and from Salt Lake City are also covered.
The 2021 summer program will run from May 26 – August 7. Online applications are available here.
Application deadline is January 31, 2021.
