Artist’s Statement: This piece of art was created to represent the stigmas surrounding female reproduction and the benefits to artificial reproductive technology (ART). The art piece is a representation of the uterus. The uterus itself is made out of a collage of future reproductive technology. It is made up of pictures of test tube babies, stem cell gametes, IVF techniques, and fertilization. The fallopian tubes are made from the stems of roses and the ovaries are represented by flower pollen symbolizing fertility. In this piece, the uterus is surrounded by red rose petals alluding to the use of flower as a word for the female reproductive system. The use of red flowers is to represent menstruation which itself is a symbol of reproductive health. There is a stark contrast between the vibrancy of the red flowers and the black and white pictures that make up the uterus. This choice was because there is a lot of negativity towards artificial reproductive technologies. The use of ARTs is an incredible advancement in reproductive science. Women would not longer bear sole responsibility for the growth of a child. This would greatly reduce the stigmas and stereotypes directed towards women. Additionally, same sex couples could bear biological children which is vital to reach full LGBTQ+ equality. This art piece represents the beauty in that as well as highlights the unfair judgements about the use of ARTs.
