Artist’s Statement: For my art project I decided to write a poem from a young boys perspective. My poem was designed to create awareness on the effects of abandonment and lack of nurturance can do to mental health in kids and how it can lead heightened criminal activity in their later lives. My thesis is that one of the biggest reasons for criminal activity is the mental aspect and the feeling of rejection that comes from the lack of nurturance and family life in their childhood. My poem supports my thesis because it explains the deep reasons why some children feel the way they do. It explains the reasoning and end goal of the decisions they make. I used repetition and pathos in order to make my poem supportive of my thesis. The young boy is explaining how he feels when he gets no recognition or affection from his parents. It makes him feel little and like he is not deserving of good things in the world. These feelings lead to recklessness and future carelessness in their lives or their decisions. I want to emphasize how important family and love are in not just childhood but all stages of life.
