Caroline Sowers – Body Image in Ballet

Artist’s Statement: The pressure to be thin in the ballet world leads many female dancers to develop a negative body image as well as disordered eating in an attempt to be successful. In my collage, I have placed phrases on a studio mirror that influential people (teachers, parents, etc.) often tell dancers in real life. As a result of these comments, when looking into the mirror the dancer sees one thing: the distorted idea that they are fat.
