Ava Sandberg – Queer Existence is Resistance

Faculty mentor: CoCo James

Artist’s Statement: Through my research I found that while institutions across the world, including sperm banks, governments, and law makers, seek to restrict and police queer family formation, queer people continue to negotiate their identities and form family in spite of, if not in resistance to these forces. In my art, I seek to express the tension of my thesis, as well as express both the injustice and pain of queer existence, alongside the joy and perseverance.
The logging industry imagery touches on the first half of my thesis. The imagery of vines touches on the second half of my thesis. I use color and composition to further my ideas.
