Faculty mentor: Sophie Caron

Oviposition guided by olfactory sense can guarantee survival of immobile Drosophila larvae. The melanogaster species subgroup has the necessary abilities to utilize diverse ecological niches. The substrates that are suitable for feeding and oviposition differ widely from one species to the next. In this project, we ask: What are the preferred substrates of Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila sechellia, and Drosophila erecta and how do these give insight into their respective ecological niches?
