The purpose of this research project was to analyze the Medicare policies that relate to hospice eligibility – specifically the eligibility of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), patients with end-of-life trajectories that are less predictable than those with cancer. We then produced several policy recommendations that aimed to reduce the frequency of “live discharge” for those with ADRD, which occurs when patients outlive the 6-month window of eligibility in hospice.
