This project uses paleoecological methods, specifically charcoal analysis, to establish a timeline of fire events for a playa, or dry lake bed, in southern Baja California, Mexico over the past 5000 years. Samples from a sediment core were analyzed using loss on ignition (LOI) and charcoal counting. Preliminary results show charcoal was present throughout the timeline, but tapers off towards the present likely due to less fuel on the landscape.
